A Russian oil tycoon accuses an Estonian yacht captain of leaving the ship alone in the Caribbean, stealing money and leaving.
"I know many Finns and Estonians. I even know a lot of Finnish - no problem! Now I am very disappointed in Estonians!"
The tired voice on the phone belongs to Sergei Kishilov, an oil tycoon living in Hamburg. Kishilov's company Sunimex mediates a quarter of the oil exported from Russia to Germany, and from time to time he can be found standing next to Mrs. Angela Merkel in joint pictures.
Mr. Kishilov is disappointed with the Estonians because he had serious differences with Ergo Kos, whom he had hired to captain his yacht.
Kishilov claims Kosk abandoned his yacht in the Caribbean in February 2012 and opened the ship's safe containing US$20,000, €10,000 and an expensive watch. Now he has sent a bad debt collection company to Ergo Kosk.
Ergo Kosk (49), a former top-class sailor and ice sailor, has just arrived home from the Offshore Sailing World Cup held in Helsinki, Tallinn. He is happy because his sons took fourth place there, while they were actually first.
Hearing about Kishilov's accusation, Kosk remains confident.
"This story is an obvious lie. This is so false that there is no truth in it! Complete bullshit! It's the great tycoon's bitterness that I stopped working with him! Nothing else."
Four years ago, Kishilov hired Estonian sailor Ergo Kosk to work on his 20-meter catamaran Selika. Lived in the south of France. Ergo was like a family member with Kishilov. Christmas holidays were celebrated together, birthdays were celebrated together. Kosk had the use of a work car, an apartment, bank cards, the salary was royal - together with the hostess of the ship, Kosk received 7,000 euros per month.
More than 16,000 miles were sailed annually. We drove around Europe, in the meantime we went across the Atlantic to the Caribbean islands.
At the end of 2011, I went to the Caribbean, where I planned to spend this summer, in order to sail north from New York in the fall, where the threat of hurricanes does not reach. And back again next summer.
Kosk: "There is nothing in Kishilov's life that interests him as much as sailing. There is a lot of money, the children are big, and so he sails around the world on a yacht. This is his only passion.”
So the weeks and months passed by giving fun rides to Kishilov's friends and relatives.
Kishilov's wife got up in the morning on the ship and opened her favorite book - the catalog of Michelin restaurants. Chose another restaurant for a luxurious dinner.
Kishilov could pay 800 euros for dinner, no question.
Kishilov says on the phone that his relationship with Ergo turned sour in the Caribbean.
"In Russian, the expression is krsÌŒa pojehala, the roof started to move. Ergo's roof started to slide (i.e. Ergo became arrogant). I don't know if he imagined he was the owner of the yacht or what."
So what happened?
Kishilov takes a deep breath.
"I know what Ergo tells you about me - that the boss is an alcoholic. Well, we all drink, those who don't take it. But so what! In fact, Ergol's roof blew off..."
"This person is an alcoholic!"
Indeed. That's what Ergo says. "It's not like taking a drink for him. He has a serious illness. His mornings began with a bottle of wine in his mouth, and so he ticked through the day.
We said from the beginning that there would not be too much alcohol on the ship. Do what you can in port, but not at the helm.
We drove to the port, the yachts are all around. He went for a ride in Selika's lifeboat, fell out of the boat, and the boat circled in the harbor, fired three shots at Selika. It's a miracle that no one was hurt.
When we crossed the Atlantic, we had no choice but to hide the wines. Otherwise, he will not come out of the cycle. And when he came out of the cycle, he was usually in the cabin for two days, the sheets wet, like the shadow of death. But nature has given him good health..."
Kishilov wanted very much to steer the ship himself, although his skills are, to put it mildly, average.
"Once he had to hit the reefs. I look, there are stones a hundred meters ahead, what is he doing now. He rushes towards the rocks in full song.
The foam of the waves is raging, you can see far away what lies ahead. He doesn't notice. Finally, I made a punch.
It became clear to me that it was high time to leave this ship.
He had French captains before me, one for two months, the other for four months. Couldn't take it anymore. I have been there for four years. If someone were to join him as captain, it would have to be as stupid as I was."
At the end of January, Kishilov had to go to Germany for a month, and Ergo told him that he was only willing to work for one more month. That too on the condition that the last month's payment is received in advance.
Kishilov did not agree. It would have been to his credit.
When Kishilov drove away, Kosk handed over the ship to a man from the charter company - the man's contacts had been given to him by Sergei himself.
It happened on February 1 in the port of Pointe-à-Pitre on the island of Guadeloupe.
Kishilov says that when he returned aboard the Selika in March, the yacht's safe was empty. The safe had a numerical code unknown to others and the key was hidden in the owner's cabin.
"This money and this watch will not make me poorer or richer, but what Ergo did is a big disappointment. Entäuschung is what they say about it in German...”
Kishilov called the police. The police came, inspected the boat and recorded the situation.
Since Ergo Kosk is an Estonian citizen, Sergei Kishilov authorized the debt collection company ERA Consult to deal with Ergo.
Rene Keivsar from ERA Consult talked to Ergo Kosk.
Keivsar: "Kosk says that he has not taken anything. And that the owner of the yacht was himself a self-absorbed man, with whom it is impossible to communicate....”
